All year long, if we’re not careful, we can be on autopilot and be permanently set to “GO” mode. We find ourselves constantly busy, juggling work, friends, family and personal commitments and expectations. We are rarely able to take a moment to breathe and appreciate the simple joys in life.
However, this summer, let’s make a conscious effort to break free from the fast-paced routine and embrace the art of the pause. In slowing down, we can challenge ourselves not with obligations of how much we can fit into our calendar but challenge ourselves to slow down, bask in the sun-filled pleasures of the season, and find contentment in the present moment.
Below let’s explore ways to hit the pause button and savor the beauty and tranquility that this time of year brings.
Nature’s Invitation to Slow Down
Summer provides us with the perfect opportunity to connect with nature and rediscover the Earth again. It’s an opportunity for us to reconnect with grounding techniques and have our feet touch the Earth to give ourselves a sense of regulation and calm. Take a moment to sit in stillness and see if you can notice nature around you. Even if you live in a bustling city, are there small moments where you can hear a bird outside or feel the wind on your face.
Unplug and Reconnect
In a world dominated by digital devices, constant notifications, and social media feeds, it’s essential to unplug and reconnect with the real world. Designate certain times during the day when you put your phone on silent, turn off your computer, and step away from screens. Rather than reaching out for your phone first thing in the morning, see if you can take a few moments to take a breath before the outside world bombards you with information. Use this time to engage in activities that bring you joy, such as reading a book, doing arts and crafts, or spending quality time with loved ones. By disconnecting from the virtual world, you’ll find yourself more present and mindful of the experiences around you.
Create Spontaneity in Your Day
This summer, allow yourself to be open to spontaneous adventures. Break free from rigid schedules and planned activities, and instead, say “yes” to unexpected opportunities. Whether it’s an impromptu road trip, a spontaneous picnic with friends, or trying out a new hobby on a whim, embracing spontaneity can lead to delightful surprises and create lasting memories.
Let’s break free from the “GO” mode that often consumes our lives and instead, learn the art of the pause and learn to slow down this summer. By slowing down, embracing the present moment, and finding joy in the little things, we can create a summer filled with meaningful experiences and inner peace. As we savor the warmth of the sun, let’s remember that life is meant to be enjoyed, one mindful moment at a time.
