Thank you, MegaFood®, for partnering with me on this post! As always, all opinions are my own.
For months now, I have been feeling exhausted. I have been so fatigued and even when I get a full night’s rest, I still don’t feel completely rested. I decided to go to my doctor to get checked out and after some blood tests, she found that I am iron deficient. When I asked if this could be contributing to my tiredness and brain fog throughout the day, she answered with a definitive ‘yes’. This is a reminder that it’s so important to see your doctor regularly if anything feels off for you! After figuring out why my energy levels are so low, I started hunting to find an easy solution that works with my lifestyle.
After reading research on iron supplements, I discovered that there are so many benefits to iron that can help us function properly, especially for us ladies. I wanted to lay them all out here so that you have more information as you consider your supplement intake and have more information when you go to the doctor.
First of all…
What is iron?
Iron is a mineral. Its main purpose is to carry oxygen throughout our body in the hemoglobin of our red blood cells, so that our cells can produce energy.
Iron deficiency occurs when your body does not create enough healthy, normal red blood cells that carry oxygen efficiently.
The health benefits of iron
Iron, as I mentioned, can affect your energy levels, so if our bodies are receiving adequate amounts of iron through diet, our energy should be boosted and you should feel less fatigued. Iron also plays a huge role in the function of our immune system, can boost our hemoglobin, and treats anemia.
Iron sources
Many foods are iron sources, such as:
- Grains
- Animal protein (which contain heme iron)
- Plant foods such as beets, dandelion, mustard greens, kale, spinach, many other green vegetables, as well as beans, lentils, and nuts.
Sometimes it can be hard to get all the iron we need through food alone, so supplements can be helpful to ensure we are nourishing and fueling our bodies. MegaFood Blood Builder® Minis are made with beets (a high-iron food from my list above), organic oranges, plus folic acid and B12 as well for healthy red blood cell production.* I know above I mentioned that I was looking for an easy solution for my iron deficiency that fits my lifestyle, but I also want to take a product that I can count on, and these have the proof to back it up. Blood Builder Minis are clinically shown to increase iron levels and reduce fatigue (without common gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea or constipation). These mini tablets are just the right size and I can take them on an empty stomach if need be.
I love MegaFood because their entire line of products carry purity seals such as non-GMO, tested for 125+ herbicides and pesticides, gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan, kosher, dairy-free and soy-free, plus, all of their products are certified glyphosate residue free. By the way, if you haven’t signed the petition yet to ban glyphosate, now’s the time!
Another helpful supplement that can aid energy levels, optimize healthy blood cell formation and helps the flow of oxygen in your blood is MegaFood Vegan B12. It includes vitamins B6 and folic acid to help support your physical and mental energy for the days you need a little boost.*
Let me know if you struggle with maintaining healthy energy levels! I’d love to hear what’s worked best for you.
