When I think of a girl boss, Lauryn from Clear Complexions Co immediately comes to mind. I came across Lauryn’s business on Instagram, and I was intrigued. Facial treatments from a home studio? AND, she lives nearby? That’s a double win in my book. Needless to say, I had an exceptional experience during my hydrofacial (a facial that is a “3 step process of suction to extract, exfoliate and hydrate”) , and I cannot wait for my next session! Throughout the treatment, she shared a bunch of valuable skincare tips with me. I thought to myself, our readers definitely need to hear about this!
I had the privilege of sitting down with the owner of Clear Complexions Co, where she shared some of her favorite products and offered tips on how to maintain hydration and glowy during the winter season.
Getting Started in the Skincare and Aesthetics World
Lauryn: I used to work at a spa for very long hours, I would be working with 10-12 people in a day which was a bit too much for me. This was when I decided to go solo- I felt like I could have a bit more control over who was coming in and out. I also had my marketing background which helped me succeed a bit faster into growing my own business instead of going in blind sighted. It was a bit of trial and error since I was still young, but I thought “If not now, then when?”

The Training Lauryn from Clear Complexions Co Needed to Be An Esthetician
Lauryn: I went to Blanche Macdonald from 2019-2020. Then I went to All Body Laser for a 7-8 month program, but it was more focused on laser hair removal and IPL- so more of the medical side of esthetics. Blanche was more geared towards the holistic side of things.
Skincare Routine Must-Haves From a Professional Esthetician
Lauryn: Any skincare that is hydrating! I have eczema so I love my hyaluronic acids and ceramides. Medical grade, personally for me, has made a huge difference. When people think “medical grade” they think it’s only beneficial for those with severe acne or severe melasma. Everyone can benefit from it, just depending what products you are using and how you are using it.
Skincare Ingredients Recommended From Lauryn
Lauryn: Formulation is key- it’s not a one size fits for ingredients! [Typically] I would recommend ceramides for dry skin. When you are combo, it is super tricky because you’re kinda dealing with the best of both worlds. It’s a matter of having your routine super balanced, so that’s why going to an esthetician is really great. Some clients who are more oily can’t tolerate salicylic if they have an aspirin allergy- aspirin is in salicylic so we would typically avoid that. A different ingredient we would recommend would be benzoyl peroxide which can help with oil production. It’s very customizable- I would never say “you NEED salicylic” because formulation is very important. You can buy something from the drugstore and salicylic will be at the bottom of the [ingredient] list and it won’t be as potent as a medical grade product.

Treatments Recommended for Each Skin Type
Lauryn: There are different kinds of skin types but we categorize them into sub-conditions: oily, dry, and combo. For combo skin, a classic facial, nano-needling, and hydrofacials would be good (they are pretty flexible on what they can do). If they are dry, hydrofacials and classics are my go-to. For oily skin, hydrofacials and classic as well. No matter what facial you choose, all treatments are customizable for clients skin concerns/goals, from modalities to products!
Tips for Hydrated and Glowy Skin During the Colder Seasons
Lauryn: Applying your serums to the skin when it’s damp is really great.Hyaluronic acid absorbs 100% more of its weight when the skin is damp so having a toner or having your skin damp, will work so much better. And getting your facials! I do get busier towards winter time because a lot of clients feel more dry or that their skin is tight. I do recommend them to come in for facials so we can focus on hydration. Also, adding a sheet or cream mask into your routine. I do recommend cream masks more because some sheet masks can leave a residue which can cause pore-clogging excess on the skin. Cream masks I really like, especially when you are short on time: cleanse your skin BEFORE you get into the shower then put on the mask. While you are shampooing and washing your body, that mask is sitting on your skin for at least 10 minutes. You are still getting some of that steam from the shower to soften the skin, like at a facial. Then rinse it off after your shower because we don’t want to use hot water on our face.

Additional Tips To Keep Your Skin Healthy
Lauryn: Drinking water, staying away from extreme heat (like turning up your furnace), and adding a humidifier in your room to combat the extreme heat and cold.
