There are so many opportunities to become involved in our communities to really make a lasting impact in our world. It can be overwhelming though when you don’t know where to start. If you are someone with many different interests and don’t know which cause specifically would be best to get involved with, starting anywhere is always better than not doing anything.
There are several approaches you can take to getting started with giving back but here is a list where you can dive into on where to connect with volunteer resources that are best for you.
Before getting started with any organization, especially one where I plan to donate monetarily, I do a search on Charity Navigator to see how their funds are allocated. While most every not-for-profit organization has an incredible cause, it is still important to look beneath the surface to see if it’s an organization that is being run efficiently and in line with your values. Below are trusted volunteer resources you can find support on to line yourself up with the opportunities that connect most with you.
Volunteer Match
Volunteer Match connects you with local opportunities based on specific categories, new opportunities, upcoming opportunities, and also which opportunities are most popular. There are opportunities abound with the 134,000 nonprofits that are within their database.
Points of Light Engage
If you have an idea of what type of volunteering you would like to get involved with, simply type in a keyword with your location and watch hundreds and thousands of opportunities populate in your area. Points of Light Engage is a volunteerism aggregator pulling in information from various databases and websites from around the web.
Do Something
DoSomething.org is a youth led platform that empowers young people to get involved in their community and work for social change. While there are volunteer opportunities focused on a wide range of causes, there is a wider range of opportunities (compared to Volunteer Match and Points of Light Engage) that are centered around racial justice, human rights, and voter registration.
